F04 in 2004
F04 took another step towards an improved unsuspended aero package. This time the undertray diffuser was attached to the chassis, and the wings were connected to the wheels through a lever mechanism from the center of pressure of the wing to the bellcranks of the suspension which then went directly to the tires. You could adjust this motion ratio such that the aero forces would lift the chassis up or push it down. By having the wings lift the chassis only slightly, we could compensate for the undertray diffuser so that the chassis remained at a constant ride height at any speed. The car continued with the Honda 600cc F4i engine, but we switched to the Performance Electronics controller for fuel injection and ignition timing. This was also the first year for the UTA carbon composite wheels that were developed by Tim Patek. The wheels are a one-piece solid carbon rim with an aluminum wheel center. See the Technical Innovations Section for further details. |
