F10 in 2010

F10 took a major step in engineering development.  The root cause for this was that the rules changed the value of fuel economy from 50 points to 100 points.  In 2009 we lost 70 points to fuel economy.  While many schools are switching to a 450 single, we decided to go even smaller and use a 250 single and then get some of the power back with a turbo and E85.  In doing this, we could potentially lose almost 100 pounds and the weight distribution would go more to the front since we lost weight in the rear.  Losing weight means that we can run smaller brake discs and several other side benefits.  Using the same aero package means that the aero effect will be more significant since performance is related to the aero downforce relative to the weight of the car.  We redesigned the drivetrain and CV joints to save even more weight.  The car set the fastest lap in the endurance event at the Michigan International Speedway and placed 6th overall.  This is significant considering how competitive the competition is now.  Some teams have 50 students and almost unlimited budgets.  It is hard to go up against something like that.
